This MarketingScents.com review hopes to provide as comprehensive a review as is possible. It aims to highlight its pros & cons. When I submitted a request for the interview I received a response from JoAnn who setup the schedule and told me I would get a call from a technician. When the time came, I got a call from Jeff. Jeff was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions about how the site is put together. He even showed me how to access their demo back office.
MarketingScents is the most expensive of the sites I reviewed. Partly, there is good reason for that. Prior to some of the other sites coming online they where they “go to” source for websites business builders. I know many business builders that either have or had a MarketingScents account.
MarketingScents has 2 different packages. Their Pro package is $19.95/mon and their Premier is $49.95/mon. On both plans you get the first month for $1. So for your first year, your average annualized cost is $385.45. This is quite the charge, so let’s look at what else they offer to see if that cost is justified. They also offer a generous “3 & Free” referral program. If you get 3 people to sign up for MarketingScents, once their trial period is over, your personal website is free! It doesn’t matter what level they sign up as compared with your level.
Ease of Use:
After finding the demo website, I was able to figure a few things out. The website contains a LOT of information and I think is pretty well organized. I was disappointed to see that they do not offer a full catalog. They have descriptions of several products available from each of the main categories (Everyday Oils, Thieves, NingXia Red, Slique, Nutrition (supplements), and Personal care products).
So interestingly, when you visit the demo website (demo.marketingscents.com) on a mobile platform the page seems to be a hybrid of mobile and not mobile friendly. When browsing around the site, it changes to a full mobile friendly site.
While navigating around, I believe there is too much information on the site. I think it is too cluttered. The information that is on it is well organized, but I think there is just too much info. There is also no mention of the kits. Any of them! They do talk about the Everyday Oils (EDO), but no talk of the Premium Starter Kit (PSK) that includes the EDO kit. The only real mention of Essential Rewards (ER) is two paragraphs explaining that a new distributor is eligible for it. There are a couple mentions of it throughout, but they are more like “Ask me about Essential Rewards”. ER members are the “bread and butter” of any business builders organization. ER orders will account for 70-85% of a builders OGV each month (sometimes more)!
MarketingScents has a team of Young Living leaders that they work with to make sure things are updated. When one of these leaders discovers something to be updated, they send it to MarketingScents, who in turn send it to Young Living for approval from their conduct and legal teams. Once the approval is given it is updated. This may sound like a long process, but MarketingScents and these leaders have been doing it for so long they have gotten much better at it.
By default, you are setup with a 3rd level domain (example.marketingscents.com). If you want you can purchase a separate domain and pass that on to them and they will set it up so that you have mywebsite.com instead.
The back office is custom built. Normally, I would consider marking somebody down for that a little, but the MarketingScents back office is very well designed and easy to navigate.
MarketingScents offers a lot of features! Some of the more unique include audio creation, video presentations. They also offer a conference bridge (99 participants) and a webinar room (50 participants) in their premier package.
- Robust contact management system
- Responsive support staff
- Robust training (both business and product use) are available
- Mobile app available for users
- Most expansive set of available features
- Contact management system only allows a contact to be in one group
- No mention of the demo website or back office on their main site
- Little information on Essential Rewards
- Cluttered site content
- No kit information
The MarketingScents service team was very responsive. I was able to schedule the phone call within a couple days.
On their website there no mention of how to access a demo copy of the site for people to test around with. As stated in the overview, Jeff showed me how to access the demo back office. I guessed and found demo.marketingscents.com as the demo website. As a developer, having something that people can play around with is an important step in getting them to commit to your product, so I think it should be more easily found.
In summary, I think that MarketingScents sites go straight to running and forget that we are supposed to crawl and walk first. I think that there is almost too much for most people to use. I think more customization is needed (blog posts or other pages). Better coverage on Essential Rewards. Uber green personality types will probably enjoy it, but I doubt that most yellows or blues us very many of the features available. Just for point of reference, I am a strong green, and I don’t think that I would use most of the features available. Overall, I give it a B grade.
