I guess when you have a child with a congenital heart defect, you should expect the unexpected. I didn’t. Everything was going great for Jaden, and he had just had a routine heart cath and been home a few days. On Monday evening, February 15th, I gave him his meds, set up his feeding pump, and made sure everything was just as it was supposed to be. I could tell he wasn’t feeling the best, but he had his casts changed that day for his clubbed feet, so I wasn’t too concerned. He was always cranky the first night after that.
At 7am my alarm went off to give him his first medicine of the day. I put it in his feeding tube, then I realized how odd it was that he had slept all night, despite the new casts. I touched his head….it was cold. I yelled at Ryan to wake up while I ran for the stethoscope. He called 911. But we already knew. Our son was gone.
The firemen/EMT’s confirmed what we knew. At that point, our bedroom became a crime scene, and we were not allowed back in while everyone conducted their investigation. I became numb and just did what I was told. The police and detectives were very gentle through the process, which I was thankful for. I knew that the investigation was going to happen as I had read enough mom blogs to know the procedures when a child dies.
We communicated with our family and close friends, but asked the adoption agency to contact the birth mom. After she was told, we put it on our Facebook as so many had followed us through our journey of adopting Jaden. I quickly realized how many people loved and supported us, while also regretting my decision to include a picture in my public post. My newsfeed instantly became filled with pictures of my baby boy as friends and family found it easiest to share the post instead of retyping such news.
Our team members were amazing and supportive. Our Young Living family as a whole gathered around us and sent meals, flowers, and money. Our adoption wasn’t final, so we had no life insurance on Jaden. However, the judge offered to make it final then and there so we would be able to make all of the decisions ourselves, and he would officially be Jaden Peter Liam Prather.
