This YLScents.com review hopes to provide as comprehensive a review as is possible. It aims to highlight its pros & cons. To conduct this interview I spoke with the co-founder and developer for YLScents (he asked that I not share his name in this review). He was knowledgeable and very helpful in conducting the interview.
YLScents is based out of Canada, so the cost is in Canadian dollars. Doing the conversion, as of 8/26, the average annual cost is $147.98. So it is the cheapest option for US users. He does not have a referral or discount program set up.
Ease of Use:
Overall site use is fairly simple because there is very little that the user can customize. It is more of a fire and forget it type site. You can create your own blog posts, but they are considering taking those away because of the non-compliant things that people tend to post on their blogs and the difficulty in contacting them to get it fixed. This is only website providers that has both the full US and Canadian catalog already in place (2 other companies are working on adding that).
The site is mostly mobile friendly, but there are a couple quirks with it. There were a couple of key things that indicated that the site isn’t fully mobile friendly. Text colors on top of the images can be hard to read in certain locations. This is more of a graphical issue though. Some of the text and images on the mobile site is too wide. For example, the pyramid image on the Essential Oils -> Essential Oil Quality page is too wide for my phone so I have to scroll to the right to see the whole thing.
One thing that would get old quick is the lack of being able to navigate back. When you go to a page there is something in to code that makes the site think that is the first page you’ve visited so click the back button will take you to the previous site instead of the previous page, no matter how long you are on the YLScents site.
One thing that does concern me is the product tips that are not FDA compliant. I sent YLScents a list and encouraged him to go through his whole list, but that still means that his customers have had non-compliant content on their site for a while.
YLScents does everything to keep the websites updated. They have committed to a 6 month release schedule (unless there are problems that may get updated sooner). The catalog contains all products (inc. those released at convention this year). However, the “convention” page under the shop also lists product from last year instead of just product from this year.
When setting up an account you get a YLScents.com/username for your website. YLScents recommends purchasing a domain and having it redirected to that site. This allows you to print business cards with that domain and you don’t have to change it later if you want to move to a different website provider.
The back office was custom built PHP code. YLScents did not have a way that I could review the back office so I will not be able to do a review of the back office for YLScents. I asked and he said I would have to sign up.

YLScents was very responsive! In fact, he was the first person that I called. Since he was in Canada he offered to call me back so it wouldn’t cost much on my bill. After I submitted the non-compliant tips, a representative from YLScents responded within 1 hour saying he would get on fixing them ASAP.
Overall, I think YLScents is a good website option to start with. Because of the lack of other functionality, I do not think that it will carry a business builder very far in their building. It establishes a web presence for them, and gives them a good place to send somebody. And right now it seems to be one of the few options available to Canadian business builders. I would give YLScents a B grade.
